Throughout the history of philosophy, the doctrine of reincarnation has been proposed as a way to explain the reward or punishment of human actions and the longing for immortality. According to this view, after death the human soul transmigrates into the body of another human or animal, a process said to occur on the basis of compatibility between the soul and the moral dispositions acquired by that body. Ibn Sīnā is among the philosophers who examined and refuted this theory. He rejects the claim that the human soul can attach to another body by advancing two arguments: first, that such a hypothesis would require two rational souls to be united in one body; and second, that in the absence of a suitable bodily instrument, the soul would be unable to perform its proper functions. Both consequences, he argues, are impossible. Professor Fayyazi has raised objections to these arguments. However, in the authors’ view, a careful reconsideration of Ibn Sīnā’s philosophical foundations shows that his position can still be defended and that Fayyazi’s criticisms can be adequately addressed.
Professor Fayyazi has criticized these arguments, and in the authors' opinion, by carefully examining the philosophical foundations of Sheikh al-Raees, one can continue to defend his views and respond to Professor Fayyazi's objections.
