Death anxiety, as one of the most fundamental human anxieties, has been addressed both in philosophy and psychology. This study aims to compare the perspectives of Avicenna, the eminent Islamic philosopher and physician, and Irvin Yalom, the contemporary existential psychotherapist, in analyzing the causes, nature, and therapeutic approaches to death anxiety. The research adopts a comparative analytical method, utilizing strategies and tools of documentary analysis. Avicenna, relying on metaphysical principles and belief in the immortality of the soul, regards death as a passage to perfection and eternal bliss, and considers the causes of death anxiety to be primarily rooted in cognitive ignorance regarding the nature of death and the life thereafter. His solution focuses on correcting beliefs and cognitive restructuring based on divine wisdom. In contrast, Yalom, with a secular and humanistic approach, views death as the definitive end of consciousness and sees the resulting anxiety as an opportunity for a more authentic life. In addition to cognitive restructuring, he employs methods such as exposure, emotional catharsis, and acceptance to alleviate death anxiety. The findings indicate that, despite fundamental differences in foundations and methods, both thinkers emphasize the role of cognitive causes in death anxiety and the importance of changing one’s perspective.
