The necessity of examining the philosophical heritage of philosophers regarding the meaning of love is a monumental task, as its concept is both profoundly evident and ultimately elusive. Ibn Sina (Avicenna), the leading figure of Peripatetic philosophy in the Islamic world, expresses three distinct perspectives on the meaning of love across his works, ranging from "medical" to "philosophical and mystical." In Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb (The Canon of Medicine)—influenced by Galenic medicine—he describes love as an obsessive illness akin to melancholy. In his Risalah fi al-Ishq (Treatise on Love), using a philosophical and argumentative approach, he seeks to prove love as the essence of the survival of beings and its permeation throughout existence. Finally, in the Ninth Namat of Al-Isharat wa al-Tanbihat (Pointers and Reminders), he adopts a mystical perspective, portraying love as a pure and chaste melody that refines the soul and prepares it for spiritual journeying. This study, employing philosophical and documentary analysis, attempts to analyze and explain the apparent inconsistencies in Ibn Sina's understanding of love. It ultimately proposes reasoned justifications to resolve and address the resulting contradictions in four parts. Among these, it prioritizes reducing the Sheikh's view in The Canon to the effects of a specific type of love.
